When i had prepped and painted my 91 white pearl z we chose a 3 stage white pearl with blue metallic, and i had a full stillen body kit to be added. Having our own shop, paying my prep guy do the prep on the body and then spraying our self plus paint, dbc or dbu ppg, plus gallon and a half of PPG 2002 clear my cost on a paint job was around 4000.
If you have a regular color then it would be cheaper, Depends which paint you will use and what quality clear , you can go with a 165 Gallon transtar clear which is so so, or you can go with PPG 2021 or around 500 a gallon.
Or you can go with 800 a gallon with dupon and other german clear coats.
To prep a z there is a lot of work to take everything off, especially i would take off moldings rear glass, front glass, quarter windows other wise it wont be great quality.
A mild prep work here locally will run around 1000 to 1300 depending. If we are using Autoglass or Transtar clear coat with paint you be looking around 1000 to spray a full z with out a body kit.
So the 2000 your getting quoted is not too far off, but if you have to cut glass off and do a better prep work with Better Primer, like Poly urethane high build primer then expect another 500 to 700 on top.
All will depend where you take the car to, our neighbore shop anderson brothers they full paint jobs start at 5000 and up so if you get a good quality 2 to 3 layers of clear coat with 3 layers of paint for under 3000 that is not bad.
